The vanishing throne elizabeth may5/12/2023 She has failed as a society Lady, accidently got engaged to a man she does not love, failed to figure out the man she might love, failed to kill the fae that killed her mother and accidently unleashed a horde of bloodthirsty fae (which very few human can even see) onto the unsuspecting world, while also being taken captive. So, Kam’s attempts at balancing her life as daughter of the Marquess of Douglas and Falconer (or fae hunter) have gone somewhat disastrously wrong. This book is not a standalone novel and relies on the reader having read the first book. If you haven’t read The Falconer I suggest you do, as this review definitely contains spoilers for the ending of that one. The Vanishing Throne by Elizabeth May is the second in a series of books following the adventures of Lady Aileana Kameron (or Kam) and the action follow on directly from the first book.

Nancy isenberg books5/12/2023 Nancy Isenberg.in her fascinating new biography, Fallen Founder, argues that Burr has been misunderstood, and underappreciated, for two centuries. Isenberg teaches courses on gender, film and legal history. Nancy Isenberg is Professor of History at Louisiana State University and the author of books and articles on American politics and culture. Revealing the gritty reality of eighteenth-century America, Fallen Founder is the authoritative restoration of a figure who ran afoul of history and a much-needed antidote to the hagiography of the revolutionary era. The Aaron Burr whom we meet through Isenberg's eye-opening biography is a feminist, an Enlightenment figure on par with Jefferson, a patriot, and-most importantly-a man with powerful enemies in an age of vitriolic political fighting. With Fallen Founder, Nancy Isenberg plumbs rare and obscure sources to shed new light on everyone's favorite founding villain.

Patina ghost5/11/2023 The thing is, Patina’s already lost a lot of things in her life. If you knew Patina, this would probably be the first thing you knew about her. Even when they’ve given you absolutely no reason to do so. A companion novel to Ghost, Reynolds’s latest takes a long hard look at what it sometimes takes to trust the people around you. But having finished the latest Jason Reynolds title in the Track series called Patina, if I could go back in time and hand my younger self one book that fell squarely outside her comfort zone, I’d probably hand her this. When I was a 9-12 year old I went out of my way to avoid works of realistic fiction that could potentially depress me. I often wonder what would have happened if I’d encountered this challenge as a child. You can read about a character that doesn’t look like your, a topic you don’t know much about, and/or a format you don’t usually pick up. Our current National Ambassador of Young People’s Literature, Gene Luen Yang, put this far more eloquently when he urged people to partake in the Reading Without Walls Challenge. You cannot be a children’s librarian or an adult children’s book reviewer if you do not constantly remind yourself that you have to read outside your comfort zone on a regular basis. Keeper of the lost cities series book 25/11/2023 He’s overprotective and cautious, but cares deeply for Sophie and her safety. His character is deep and compelling.Īnother one of my favorites from this book is Sandor, Sophie’s goblin bodyguard. But, as you discover, he is much deeper than jokes and laughs. Keefe steals the majority of the book, delivering his standard comedic responses to everything. You’ll find yourself caring much more about the external events because of the time used to endear you to the characters. The stars of the entire Keeper of the Lost Cities series are the characters and their relationships. It is more of a character-focused, suspenseful story than thrills and chases. The same mystery and intrigue laces every page. The plot of Exile is less intense than Keeper, but it is no less interesting. Sophie is, once, again, called upon to uncover hidden memories and save someone close to her. She even uses her telepathic powers to find a female alicorn-the rarest animal in the world.īut her kidnappers are still at large, and the Black Swan continue to leave cryptic messages. After a year of living in the world of the elves, surrounded by her friends, everything is starting to feel normal. Plotįinally settled into her home at Havenfield, Sophie-now thirteen-thought she was safe. It takes some time off the high-intensity finale of book one and spends time with the characters. The second book in the Keeper of the Lost Cities series doesn’t disappoint.

Walden by henry david thoreau5/11/2023 He also takes time to talk about the experience at Walden Pond itself, commenting on the animals and the way people treated him for living there, using those experiences to bring out his philosophical positions. Along with his critique of the civilized world, Thoreau examines other issues afflicting man in society, ranging from economy and reading to solitude and higher laws. Walden is neither a novel nor a true autobiography, but a social critique of the Western World, with each chapter heralding some aspect of humanity that needed to be either renounced or praised. Published in 1854, it details Thoreau’s life for two years, two months, and two days around the shores of Walden Pond. Walden by Henry David Thoreau is one of the best-known non-fiction books written by an American. Download cover art Download CD case insert Walden

Midnight Phone Calls by A.E. Parker5/11/2023 Deduction of the guilty party is done by tracking particular oddities given specific to the mystery, such as the guests all trying on specific scents of perfume or a note that some are wearing a particular style or color of clothing. The first nine mysteries typically involve some sort of competition between the guests (in which case readers must deduce who won), a guest attempting to murder another guest, or some sort of rare treasure of Mr Boddy's that has been stolen. The answer is printed upside-down on the next page, providing an explanation of how the criminal was foiled, or how the victim (if there was one) survived. Each mystery ends with a question to answer, and a picture of the checklist from the game is provided to assist with solving. This ends with some kind of cliffhanger that leads into the first chapter.Įxcept for the first book, which contains thirteen, all the books contain ten mini-mysteries similar to the Encyclopedia Brown books. He explains the situation and introduces the six suspects. The books are compilations of mini-mysteries that the reader must solve involving various crimes committed at the home of Reginald Boddy by six of his closest "friends".Įach book begins with a small chapter where Mr Boddy introduces himself to the reader. Development as Freedom by Amartya Sen5/10/2023 The biopolitics of development: reading Michel Foucault in the postcolonial presentĬritique and the Black Horizon: Questioning the Move ‘Beyond’ the Human/Nature divide in International RelationsĬhandler, D. The intention is to genealogically draw out the changing nature of Western discourses of development in order to examine how development and autonomy have been radically differently articulated in discourses of Western power and how today’s discursive framing feeds on and transforms colonial and early postcolonial approaches to the human subject. The focus is upon today’s human-centred approaches, in which individual autonomy or freedom is the central motif. This chapter engages with Foucault’s critical exploration of shifts and transformations in liberal frameworks of governmental rationality to consider how our understanding of the human subject has been transformed within development discourses. Where is the human in human-centred approaches to development? A critique of Amartya Sen’s ‘Development as Freedom’ |
