Joan baez and a voice to sing with5/13/2023 ![]() ![]() “It took a lot of courage to be nonviolent,” says Neuwirth, “especially when people had clubs, dogs, handcuffs and all that shit.” “She has a kind of bravery that could just kick down the doors.” Baez was a fixture at marches and protests, especially in the Sixties, preaching a philosophy of nonviolence. ![]() “Joan has that rock & roll attitude toward life and freedom and love,” says singer-songwriter Bob Neuwirth, who has known Baez since her folk-club days in Cambridge, Massachusetts, in the Sixties. “I told them, ‘If I had a hammer – I’d hit myself on the head. “But I said, ‘ Ooh, can I get one too?’ ” In 2010, when she was invited to perform at a White House celebration of music from the civil-rights era, Baez refused a request, from Michelle Obama, to sing “If I Had a Hammer.” “That is the most annoying song,” Baez says. “Most mothers would say, ‘Oh, honey, really?’ ” she says proudly. Resting her chin on her hand, she flashes her recent metal-chick tattoo: a series of circles and arrows that rings her right wrist, from a visit to New Zealand with her son, Gabe. Baez, 76, loves to play against her image as the serene, hyperserious matriarch of folk music. ![]()

Christopher clark prussia5/13/2023 ![]() ![]() Prussia himself.Īctually he was a weak, insecure, and not overly bright man, who tried to compensate for a paralyzed arm by appearing extra martial. Your Kaiser had a tendency to get carried away by the sound of his own voice.ĭuring World War i, strutting about with his title of “Supreme Warlord” (which sounds even more impressive in German: Oberster Kriegsherr), Wilhelm would speak enthusiastically of “piles of corpses six feet high” and wax poetic about a superhuman German sergeant “who killed 27 Frenchmen with 45 bullets.” Little wonder then, that to the English-speaking world he became the very symbol of the Horrible Hun, Mr. “When your Kaiser orders it, you must shoot even your father and mother,” he once solemnly admonished an audience. ![]() Upon seeing his photograph in 1890, a French general noted that “he looks like a declaration of war.” He sounded like one, too. ![]() ![]() It enables economic strength to be a check to political power rather than a reinforcement. The fundamental threat to freedom is power to coerce, be it in the hands of a monarch, a dictator, an oligarchy, or a momentary majority…By removing the organization of economic activity from the control of political authority, the market eliminates this source of coercive power. Political freedom means the absence of coercion of a man by his fellow men. In a cogent but comprehensive analysis, Friedman explains that economic freedom is a crucial element of individual freedom in its own right, but is also crucial for supporting political freedom: Political freedom, both historically and logically, is inseparable from economic freedom. ![]() He calls the view “a delusion,” holding that there is “an intimate connection between economics and politics.” Though Friedman concedes the possibility of an economically free and politically repressed society, the opposite, he claims, is impossible. In his popular work, Capitalism and Freedom, in a chapter titled “The Relation between Economic Freedom and Political Freedom,” Friedman explains how a society cannot have the latter without the former.įriedman criticizes the notion that politics and economics can be regarded separately and that any combination of political and economic system is possible. As we approach what would be Milton Friedman’s 104 th birthday this Sunday, July 31 st, we should note the enduring significance of his evaluation of the connection between economic and political freedom. ![]()

![]() ![]() He also published the novel The Sykaos Papers and a collection of poetry. He also published influential biographies of William Morris (1955) and (posthumously) William Blake (1993) and was a prolific journalist and essayist. He is probably best known today for his historical work on the radical movements in the late 18th and early 19th centuries, in particular The Making of the English Working Class (1963). No one interested in the history of the English people should fail to read his book."- Times Literary SupplementĮdward Palmer Thompson was an English historian, writer, marxist and peace campaigner. "Mr Thompson's deeply human imagination & controlled passion help us to recapture the agonies, heroisms & illusions of the working class as it made itself. Without any reservation, The Making of the English Working Class is the most important study of those days since the classic work of the Hammonds."- Commentary "Thompson's book has been called controversial, but perhaps only because so many have forgotten how explosive England was during the Regency & the early reign of Victoria. Thompson shows how the working class took part in its own making & recreates the whole life experience of people who suffered loss of status & freedom, who underwent degradation & who yet created a culture & political consciousness of great vitality. This account of artisan & working-class society in its formative years, 1780-1832, adds an important dimension to our understanding of the 19th century. ![]()

Enchanted Forest by Johanna Basford5/12/2023 ![]() And so I ended up setting up a coloring gallery on my website where people can upload their images and share them with the world and tell us what kind of colored pencils or pens they used. And it's just amazing to see how so many people can take the same collection of images and make them so different and unique. My inbox was getting absolutely jammed with people sending photographs of all the different pages of the coloring book. On how people have responded to her books So it was, you know, almost like an art book, not a children's coloring book where the drawings are quite simple, but something that's really beautiful that you just wanted to own and to have out and to show your friends. I actually was a textile designer - that was what I trained as - and what I wanted to do was to make a book where every page was just beautiful. But no matter what the picture, there just layers of depth and detail. Every illustration has little things hidden in it, so it might be a rogue butterfly or a little half-hidden robin, or, you know, a cheeky little squirrel gathering nuts.
